elopements
There’s seems to be something magical about eloping at the Kennedy Center! You’ll see why I say that after seeing photos from today’s romantic Kennedy Center elopement blog post…
You’ve read this before, and I’ll say it again: I love photographing weddings, in whatever form they take. It’s fun getting to take such precious photos on one of the most significant days of two people’s lives. And elopements are some of my favorite events! I think it’s so romantic when two people are excited to get married. When they want to honor their relationship in private or with their absolute closest friends and family. M & R’s romantic Kennedy Center elopement was one of those occasions!
I don’t know if this was always the case – I first heard about it during the pandemic – D.C. allows couples to self-officiate their own wedding. Meaning, they get to be the ones in charge of the ceremony – they get to ‘marry’ themselves! This is so special because that means the ceremony and celebration gets to be literally just the two people who are getting married. A marriage obviously thrives with the love and support of friends and family. And it’s reassuring, comforting, and warming to have loved ones present for your vows. At the end of the day, though, a marriage is between two people. I definitely see the appeal of starting a marriage in such an intimate way, with just the two people who are in it. (And the photographer, I guess! haha)
M & R wanted to experience a romantic Kennedy Center elopement as they said their vows. They loved the beautiful building, the sweeping willows, and the space to have a private moment. On a somewhat chilly, drizzly evening in the fall, the Kennedy Center was just that: private, romantic, and beautiful.
We started with just a few portraits of the two love birds before starting their romantic Kennedy Center elopement. M & R live in Virginia, so they wanted to do their ceremony under the willows with Rosslyn in the background. It ended up being an absolutely gorgeous spot to capture everything, plus the amazing sunset behind them. After their ceremony, the sun had pretty much set behind the gathering clouds. I cranked up my ISO and used some of the ambient light from the building, and got some truly beautiful and romantic portraits. Some of my favorites ever!
Congratulations and best wishes again to M & R on their marriage!
