HI, I'M RACHEL!

You know how excited I get when my clients get super dressed up for their session. And if you know that, you’ll now know how excited I am to share with you Ashley and Chris’ formal DC engagement portraits in Washington, D.C.!
Basically, I get excited whenever the word ‘formal’ is included in the blog title! haha And if there are sequins involved – eep! Ashley and Chris really went all out for their formal DC engagement portraits last fall. Ashley got a beautiful sequins gown from BHLDN for the occasion, and it looked amazing on her! She also had her hair and makeup done by Carolyn Thombs Artistry. Chris’ suit was the perfect modern shade of blue. These two looked like models on the National Mall!
I met Ashley and Chris through REHP Love Birds, Alena and Matt. These four are good friends, and it’s always such an honor when a couple trusts me enough to refer their loved ones. I was excited to meet Ashley and Chris for this reason. And also because I knew they had such a fantastic vision for their formal DC engagement portraits session.
Ashley is a food historian and works at the Smithsonian – her dream job. Chris is super supportive of her career and they both have an affinity for history. The National Mall is a mere ten minute walk from their home, so they spend a lot of time there. They love to walk along the Mall, explore, and enjoy the peace of the gardens at the Smithsonian castle. Since they have a special connection with much of the National Mall, they decided to do the two hour session. That way we could highlight two meaningful locations in their formal DC engagement portraits: the Lincoln Memorial and Smithsonian castle gardens.
The morning of their session was supposed to be super windy. After giving them the option to reschedule, they decided to go ahead with the session. I point that out because I think that says something about them as a couple. Not only were they willing to work through a challenge, they actually had a great time together in the wind! They both kept up their spirits, had fun, and most importantly – enjoyed each other. Working in wind is tough, and Ashley and Chris worked through it together and we got some gorgeous photos!
I also want to mention, this was the first full portrait session I did with my new camera – the Canon R6! Up until this session, I had been using it sparingly as I was getting familiar with the new-to-me user interface. I snapped a few photos at the beginning of this session, and once I saw the outcome, I decided to keep using it. I think there was something with the light on this day, plus Ashley’s shimmery dress and the pop of Chris’ blue suit. It all just worked with the sharpness and color within this new camera. Needless to say, I’m obsessed with the R6 and use it exclusively now.
So romantic!! Eep!
I love these closeups that show the detail on Ashley’s dress!
