Go ahead and give it up for Clarissa and her GW University graduation photos! Woot woot! Why are we cheering? So many reasons. Let’s find out.
Clarissa’s mom reached out last year excited to plan a cherry blossoms graduation photos session for her daughter. She loved the idea of capturing Clarissa with the cherry blossoms as a nod to her time in D.C. studying at The George Washington University. The plan was to take photos with the blossoms and then finish up on the nearby University campus. I was psyched!
Once quarantine kicked in, the tidal basin was shut down, and it became apparent that doing photo shoots was a risky activity due to the potential of spreading COVID-19, we decided to put Clarissa’s graduation session on hold. Womp womp.
Clarissa had so much patience throughout the process of getting her session rescheduled. Since cherry blossoms season had passed, we decided to revise the first location of Clarissa’s photos to the Lincoln Memorial. Well, over the late spring and early summer, the National Parks Service opened and closed the Mall many times for consideration of the ongoing social justice protests and demonstrations. Totally understandable. And yet it was still a bit of a yo-yo feeling, getting the session scheduled and then having to reschedule it – up to five times for some students.
The great thing about Clarissa’s situation, though, was that at a certain point our need to reschedule was based on some happy news! Clarissa was chosen to work for Teach for America and moved across the country for her assignment. So exciting! We ended up pushing her session to the fall when she’d be back in town for a bit.
Clarissa is one of the many class of 2020 graduates who made it through the end of her senior year via virtual learning and graduated without an official commencement ceremony. That made her GW University graduation photos session that much more meaningful and purposeful. Her graduation session felt like a celebration in and of itself.
We started the session at the Lincoln Memorial, got some beautiful photos there, and then walked to The GW University campus just a short distance away. I had actually never been to the campus before, so I enjoyed Clarissa giving me a tour and showing me all the best places to take photos. She chose some really picturesque spots and I just love how those photos turned out!
Join me in sending congratulations to miss Clarissa, as well as wishes for best of luck in her future endeavors!
