I LOVE love love taking photos of people. But that’s not how I started with photography. And I truly believe you have to go back to your roots for inspiration & re-invigoration. It’s like when I was training my dog when she was a puppy: the training guides said that whatever trick your dog learns first will be their go-to trick when they don’t know what else to do. The kind of photography I learned in high school is my touch stone for inspiration. (Wait… did I just compare photography to a dog trick? Yep, I did! Just go with it…)
In high school I had assignments for what to take photos of each week, but most of them were extremely open ended. It was basically me with my camera, exploring the world, finding things that I was drawn to & learning interesting ways to capture them with my dad’s old Yashica X2. What stuck with me over the years was how I was drawn to nature for inspiration & how I had found shapes & lines the most interesting to photograph. I developed my photographic eye in that way & am still taking photos like that today in new ways & sometimes in the same way I used to.
All this is to say, staying inspired as a photographer is a must. My clients, their love, their passion, their gorgeous faces inspire me at every shoot. But I always want to bring something extra with me to a photo gig. That something extra is my own unique point of view, honed through years of exploring the world with a camera to my eye. I try to get out and shoot for myself as much as I can and making time to do that is important. That’s why two weekends ago I planned a whole weekend getaway based around taking photos.
In March I traveled to Bucks County Pennsylvania to photograph Allison & Amir’s wedding. I had the opportunity to drive from their wedding venue, the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA, to New Hope, PA, and on through to Lambertville, NJ, to the groom & bride’s getting ready locations, respectively. And it was a stunning drive! There were a dozen or so places I wanted to stop & take photos! But alas, I was on a wedding day mission & couldn’t stop, but I knew then that I already wanted to go back.
Go back I did, with pup & boyfriend in tow. Below are the photos I was able to capture while there. From Doylestown to New Hope & all the land in between.
