HI, I'M RACHEL!

Today I’m excited to share photos from Katie and Fernando’s recent late autumn FDR Memorial elopement in Washingtong, D.C.!
I realize I start almost every post by saying “I’m excited”. I actually am always excited to share my clients and my work. My work is ever evolving and I still get excited while I’m shooting, editing, and blogging. This is what it means to love your job! I’m especially excited about these photos because I tried some new things and I’m obsessed with the results!
Katie and Fernando traveled to D.C. from Pennsylvania for their FDR Memorial elopement. They chose the DC War Memorial for their actual ceremony and some portraits, and the FDR Memorial for more portraits. Y’all know how much I love the DC War Memorial and I always enjoy photographing wedding ceremonies there – large and not so large. It’s definitely a special place in the city and I think it’s such a romantic place for a wedding ceremony.
The FDR Memorial, I admit, I wasn’t as excited about. I’ve shot there a few times during cherry blossoms season and it’s somewhat of a challenging location for those type of photos. I was viewing it from that lens (pun intended!) and definitely let that taint my level of excitement about shooting there for Katie and Fernando’s FDR Memorial elopement. This just goes to show you can’t base future/current experience on past experience. This time I had so much fun taking photos at the FDR Memorial and I think that shows in K & F’s images!
Katie asked her long time friend, who lives in the area, to officiate their wedding ceremony. He’s a high school history teacher and wedding officiant on the side, and he did a great job performing their ceremony. He kept it short and sweet, and I’m sure it was extra special for Katie and Fernando to have a friend be the one to marry them.
After the ceremony we spent some time at the War Memorial taking pictures and getting to know each other a little. Once our time there was up, we walked over to the FDR Memorial. The FDR Memorial is a little different than most of the other Memorials along the National Mall. I’m copying the text directly from the NPS.gov website because I feel it’s the perfect description of this unique memorial: “A meandering pathway leads past waterfalls, bronze sculptures, and FDR’s own powerful words carved on the granite walls.” There are new things to discover around every corner. I felt so much excitement to see what was next once we finished in one section.

Congratulations and best wishes to Fernando and Katie! And much appreciation to them for being good sports so we could get some really cool photos!
