My favorite time of year is officially right around the corner! Peak bloom of the D.C. cherry blossoms – the trees around the tidal basin – is slated for the end of this month. I love living in D.C. this time of year and being a D.C. cherry blossoms photographer!

The purpose of today’s post is to share a little education about cherry blossoms; stuff I’ve learned through being a D.C. cherry blossoms photographer. Namely – the different types of cherry blossoms trees that surround the tidal basin, so you can easily choose which type you want your photos with!

I’m excited to share with you what I’ve learned over the past four years (this will be my fifth year!) being a D.C. cherry blossoms photographer. I’m going to describe the three most prevalent types of tress and share photos I’ve taken in years past. Let’s get to it!

The most familiar type of cherry blossom tree is the Yoshino tree. These trees feature pale pink, almost white, blooms that are plentiful along the length of the branches and are super delicate. They’re known to have a light almond fragrance when they’re in bloom. These trees are the most familiar because they’re the most prevalent around the tidal basin. They make up 70% of the cherry blossom trees you’ll see in D.C.

The Akebono trees are almost as prevalent as the Yoshino trees. They’re actually a mutation of the Yoshino trees and look very similar, except they’re just slightly pinker than the Yoshino blossoms. They are the quintessential cherry blossom, if you ask me!

I am obsessed with the kwanzan cherry blossoms! I found a whole giant patch of them last year, somewhat off the beaten path, and I am super excited to go back this year! These bright pink, fluffy blossoms bloom about two weeks after the Yoshino variety. These trees are also super prevalent in the area, thank goodness! As a D.C. cherry blossoms photographer, I am excited to schedule sessions specifically for these blossoms!
