I mean, that picture kind of speaks for itself, right?
When my client, Ashley, said she & her fiance, Antonio, wanted to do a powder paint fight during their engagement shoot, my response was to 1. google what powder paint is (haha!) & 2. say, “Absolutely! As long as I can join in at the end!” I didn’t end up joining in, but I had SO much fun just watching & shooting. There is no way you can NOT have fun when there’s powder paint around!
So, like I said, I had never heard of powder paint & not seen any photos of a powder paint session. I had to do a little bit of research to figure out the best way to shoot such a thing, and what I found was super helpful! Apparently, a little bit of powder paint goes a long way, which was good because that means it will last longer, and that means more play time! Also, you want to keep your mouths kind of shut while you’re playing so powder doesn’t get in your mouth. And last, for the photographer, you want to have your camera covered up as much as possible so little powder particles don’t sneak into the nooks n’ crannies of your equipment. I used a Target bag that I cut a hole in for the end of the lens – super fancy! But they do make covers specifically for stuff like this, so I recommend purchasing one of those if you plan to do a powder paint photo sesh.
I arrived to our shoot a little early so I could scout out the perfect spot near our location to do the powder paint portion. I figured we’d want a somewhat secluded area so we didn’t draw too much attention, and so we didn’t get in trouble! Also, I wanted a plain, clean background where the paint would really stand out. I ended up finding this secluded patio next to a government building near Union Station. The ground & walls were all white stone, so it was perfect! It was below street level, so it was secluded, and though we had a few passersby take a peek at what we were doing, for the most part, Ashley & Antonio had some privacy to really let loose & enjoy themselves.
I love how Ashley & Antonio were so gung-ho to do this! They obviously have a great time together, laughing & being silly, and I think we captured that perfectly in these photos. Thanks to A & A for coming up with such a creative idea for your shoot! These photos turned out great & they will be fun memories to look back on.
If you’re interested in doing a powder paint session, contact me & we’ll plan the shoot together!
