Not only is it Christmas week, but my birthday week as well (agh!). Growing up, the holidays were somewhat difficult, having divorced parents and getting shifted around from house to house, or, as was the case for a few years there, country to country. Even when I was in the U.S., we were often visiting relatives a few states away on Christmas day through my birthday, and I was separated from at least part of my family. Not to start this blog post off on a depressing note, but all of that is to say, for those of you who don’t thoroughly enjoy the holiday season – for whatever reason – I feel you.
Since becoming an adult, I’ve been happy to be a little more in control of the events that make up my holiday season. There is still the shifting around from house to house visiting family, but now I get to travel around with my dog, Milli, and boyfriend, so I feel like I have a little piece of home with me no matter where I am. I’ve created my own holiday traditions both within my home and with the people in my life, in which I truly cherish partaking each year.
From wrapping gifts while a holiday scented candle burns in the background as I watch my favorite Christmas movies (The Family Stone & All I Want for Christmas), to baking goodies/nearly burning down the house with my friend Alexis, to Twisted Peppermint scented EVERYTHING, to taking a holiday portrait of my pup while she is super uncooperative, all of these things mean the holidays to me now. I’ve created my own winter wonderland that I get excited to reenact each and every year.
The best thing about getting older, though, is having some perspective: switching the mindset from being put-out about shuffling around from place to place during the holidays, to feeling lucky to have so many people in my life to visit and share the love. Everyone is alive and well, and for that, I am grateful.
Below are some of my favorite holiday photos from this and years past. I hope they inspire the joy of the season for you, or at least cheer you up if you’re having a Blue Christmas. Happy Holidays!!
