You guys, I come from a place of YES, as one Bethenny Frankel advocates. So one of the biggest joys I get out of my business is solving challenges that arise – finding the YES, figuring out how to make things work. It feels even greater when I can help my clients with their challenges, so that’s the spirit of today’s blog post.
I’ve had quite a few people ask me what I suggest for how to manage frizzy hair for humid day photo shoots, and until now I didn’t have air tight answers for them. The D.C. area is super humid from spring until December. There is no way to guarantee there won’t be humidity on the day of a photo shoot, and we can’t always reschedule and keep rescheduling until we find a day that happens to have no or low humidity. That’s not respectful of your time or my time. And let’s face it, there are like six days of the year with low humidity in this area! haha It would be impossible to only shoot on those days!
Enter my hair stylist, Mora of Cutting Edge by Mora, to get us to our YES! Today Mora is answering all my questions and clients’ questions about how to manage frizzy hair for humid day photo shoots! She is showing us how we can make our photo shoots work no matter what the humidity level.
And I want to point out – the photos I’m sharing today are from our Styled Shoot last October, which took place on a *super* humid evening. You can see how well our model, Jess’s, hair held up after Mora styled it.
Take it away, Mora!
What does humidity do to your hair?
Get regular haircuts – this helps to ensure good health and prevent frizz. Also, rinsing your hair with cold water allows the cuticles in your hair to lay flat and smooth the frizz. More tips include using professional grade shampoo and conditioner, washing your hair every other day so it doesn’t get dry, using a leave in conditioner to remove tangles, and using a light styling product and finishing it with a light serum to ensure smoothness.
What styling tips do you have for people with curly hair how to manage frizzy hair for humid day photo shoots?
A great tip for clients with curly hair to avoid humid hair is to get a Brazilian Blowout. It is not a relaxer or a straightener, it just keeps your natural curls without the frizz. Some products that smooth out the frizz for curly haired clients consist of using salon grade smoothing shampoos, hydrating conditioners, using a mask twice a month, leave in conditioner, oil based styling products, and hydrating serums.
What types of products are good to use in humidity?
Majority of the Moroccan Oil products, the It’s a 10 Silk Express line, and the It’s a 10 plus Keratin products are good for smoothing and embracing natural curls and is great for anyone who suffers from frizzy hair when it’s humid.
How much of a difference would it make to have your hair professionally styled on the day of your session in order to cut down on the likelihood of frizz developing?
There are many benefits of getting your hair professionally styled vs. styling it yourself. One, the reassurance that the right products are being used on your hair. Two, getting the desired look you want. Three, assuring a long lasting look for the rest of your day. Four and best of all, you get to pamper yourself.
Do you have any other advice with regards to controlling frizz?
Try to take the photos when the humidity is at its lowest [note from Rachel: that would be in the morning] and carrying some serum to use when your hair isn’t cooperating.
Is there any reason to cancel or postpone your photo session because there is humidity?
Unless it is raining outside, I don’t see any reason why you should.
